Environmental Conservation Focusing on Coral Bleaching Event.

This seminar topic presented by Nurul Hidayah from MSc. Housing (Refer figure 1). Her objective for this study are:
1) To relate the factors of coral bleching events.
2) To clarify the impacts of coral bleaching events to ecosystem.
3) To identify the strategies and policy action on coral conservation. The coral reef can find in the sea (Refer figure 2). The largest concentration of reefs in Malaysia is Semporna, Sabah. Coral Bleaching means loss of the original form such as color , shape etc for coral reef.

Factors of coral bleaching is sedimentation because of human activities such as land clearing and coastal construction. The second factors is exploitative fishing that refer the unsustainable method to catch the fish. The global fishing industry is not only over-exploitative but also notoriously short sighted because illegal practise to catch the fish (Refer figure 3).   The ecosystem overfishing give the bad impact to coral reef.  The polluted sea water caused by oil spills from large ships. In addition it also come from dredging oil areas. The fourth factors because of reducing salinity even further and then caused of coral reef death.

The protection and prevention of the marine environmental especially to protect the coral reef from bleaching it have several conservation. In Malaysia to protect and prevent the coral reef, it have several federal laws are relevant to marine and coastal resources management and conservation such as National Park Act (1980), Environmental Quality Act (1974) and Environmental Protection Enactment (2002). That also have several sustainable development plan for coral conservation such as The United Nation Conservation on The Law Sea (UNCLOS) and International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI). This program to reduce the coral bleaching in the worl to make sure this coral reef sustain for the future generation.
